History of Radstadt

Radstadt is one of the oldest towns in the Pongau region. The settlement was granted city rights as early as the 13th century and was the only fortified town in the mountains within the Archbishopric of Salzburg. Parts of the medieval city wall, including the Witch’s Tower, Pond Tower, and Capuchin Tower, are preserved to this day and define the cityscape.

Several city fires changed Radstadt over the centuries. As a result, the old town today presents a harmonious mix of Baroque and Neoclassical styles. History can be discovered step by step around the parish church, the Schusterturm (Cobbler’s Tower), or Lerchen Castle.

Festivals & Living Tradition

Here, festivals and traditions are celebrated as they come. Throughout the year, music, customs, and cultural and sporting events shape local life. When the town band marches through Radstadt on the eve of Corpus Christi and also pays a visit to Gut Weissenhof, when the cows return home during the cattle drive in autumn, or when the tower brass players sound over the rooftops during Advent, you can feel how vibrant Radstadt is. Events such as the Guard Festival, the Dumpling Festival, the arts and crafts market, the Radstadt Night Watchman, and the Paul Hofhaimer Days bring people together and create lasting encounters.
