Hohensalzburg Fortress towers high above the city of Salzburg. The view up to the castle alone shows how closely history and landscape are intertwined here—a special destination that combines wonderfully with a stroll through the city.
Once at the top, a sweeping 360-degree view opens up over Salzburg and the surrounding mountain landscape. Historic rooms, ramparts, and exhibitions tell of the fortress’s eventful history since its construction in the 11th century. Particularly noteworthy are the magnificent princely chambers, the multimedia “Magic Theater,” and every Sunday from 11:45 AM to 12:00 PM, historic trumpet pieces resound from the fortress during the Salzburg Tower Fanfare.
The fortress can be reached by the FestungsBahn funicular or on foot via a walking path through the old town.

Inside, exhibitions guide visitors through the history of the castle and its inhabitants. A particular highlight is the falconry demonstrations, where eagles, falcons, and other birds of prey display their flying skills and provide insight into the ancient hunting tradition. From the viewing points around the castle, a sweeping view opens up over the valley and the surrounding mountains.
The castle is easily accessible by car. From the parking area, a short path leads up; alternatively, the funicular lift takes you directly to the castle complex in just a few minutes.
