Gut Weissenhof Alm – Paradise for Our Guests
Hintergnadenalm in Obertauern in SalzburgerLand
Hiking Destination Hintergnadenalm – Weissenhofalm
History of the Hintergnadenalm
In the 17th century, at the grace of the archbishop ("Gnade" means "grace" in German, hence the name "Gnadenalm"), the Gnadenalm was bestowed upon the larger farms in Taurachtal valley.
The Gnadenalm is a 400-hectare area of alpine pastures. Since time immemorial, some 80 dairy cows and around 120 head of young cattle have been brought here to graze during the summer months. In former times, all of the milk was turned into butter and Radstadt-style cheese at area mountain huts.
In the 1920s and 30s, the Weissenhof hut was run as the Gnadenalm Ski Lodge by the brother of the then owner, our grandfather Rupert Habersatter, one of just four lodging establishments available to skiers in Obertauern at that time.
Later, Alois Habersatter took over Gasthof Habersatter in Radstadt from our great-grandfather. He is the father of the very well-known ski jumper, Walter Habersatter, who was the world's best ski jumper in 1959.
With the onset of World War II, the hut continued to be used for agricultural purposes only.
Nevertheless, our dairymaids have never ceased to serve up hearty snacks and refreshing drinks to visitors. For as many years as we can remember, Berta and husband Sepp have taken care of the Alm for us. Sepp is responsible for the cattle, and Berta serves our guests traditional regional favorites, milk and beverages.
A paradise of nature, clear air, spectacular flowers. Find the peace and quiet you seek at the Hintergnadenalm – Weissenhofalm - a paradise for hiking fans. Berta is always happy to share tales about the time she has spent here in the hill country, and has lots of good tips about native alpine herbs and fruits, always radiating her unique brand of serenity, calm and experience. She is a person who immediately makes you feel right at home. In the later afternoon, it is not rare for hunters and folk musicians to gather here, many an alpine folk melody filling the air.
Health Tip from Gut Weissenhof: Take a deep, cleansing breath
Our mountain air is reputed to have very special benefits. At elevations above 1350 meters, allergy-sufferers are also able to take a break from their various complaints - there is simply nothing here to aggravate your symptoms. An AMAS study showed that the high-alpine air promotes regeneration of body, mind and spirit.
Once-weekly hikes with the owner
Our guided, once-weekly hike from Gut Weissenhof in Salzburger Land, Austria, is a very special highlight. The owner leads guests out through the nearby mountains, recounts and explains much about his home region, and includes a refreshment stop at the Weissenhofalm, where we are greeted by our dairymaid, Berta. Berta treats our guests to homemade Radstadt-style cheese, original farmhouse bread and country bacon, as well as sweet temptations including an array of doughnuts.
